Explaining the nine sequential meditative attainments after the six superknowledges: although the dhyānas explained above are complete in substance and function, they are all contemplative dhyānas, and the characteristics of refining, ripening, and softening them have not yet been clarified. Now, wishing to refine the substance and function of contemplative dhyānas to make them fully ripened, so that when entering their substance and emerging from it the mind has no intervening thoughts, they are explained next. Generally speaking of 'sequential meditative attainments': if, when entering dhyāna, the wisdom of one's deep mind is profound and sharp, one can enter from one dhyāna into another dhyāna, mind following mind in succession without the intrusion of foreign thoughts, hence they are called sequential meditative attainments.
