First, great benevolence. The Buddha abides in the mind of great benevolence, and by the power of the wholesome roots of great benevolence, he can genuinely bestow worldly happiness and supramundane happiness upon all sentient beings; hence it is said that benevolence can bestow happiness. As for the benevolence within the four immeasurables, although there is the mental intention to bestow happiness, sentient beings do not actually obtain happiness; hence it is not called 'great.' There are two kinds of bestowing happiness: first, abiding in the samādhi of great benevolence, the power of benevolence secretly perfumes them so that sentient beings obtain peace and happiness according to what they ought to attain; second, the power of the benevolence samādhi universally manifests through the three karmas, so that any sentient beings who ought to attain happiness obtain peace and happiness upon seeing, hearing, or knowing [him]. Hence it is called great benevolence; this is the body of the wish-fulfilling jewel king.
