Fourth, rely on wisdom, do not rely on consciousness. 'Relying on wisdom' means that the mind of illumination and discernment is called 'wisdom'. If, with a mind of right contemplation and wisdom that is unattached, one cultivates the myriad practices and merits of the pāramitās, one will be able to shatter and scatter the five-abode afflictions and the karmic deeds of boundless saṃsāra, and inevitably obtain the permanence, bliss, self, and purity of Mahāyāna nirvāṇa; hence it is said: 'rely on wisdom'. 'Do not rely on consciousness' means that the mind of conceptual fabrication is called 'consciousness'. If one relies on false consciousness to cultivate the myriad practices and merits of the pāramitās, one will amass the five-abode afflictions and the karmic deeds of saṃsāra in the two extremes, and because of this wander endlessly in transmigration with manifold sufferings unceasing; hence it is said: 'do not rely on consciousness'.
