Third, difficult dhyāna. What is the bodhisattva's 'difficult dhyāna'? In brief, there are three kinds: a bodhisattva has long practiced supreme and wondrous meditative absorption, and their mind has attained mastery in all samādhis; pitying sentient beings and wishing to bring them to maturity, they relinquish the bliss of the supreme dhyāna and take birth in the desire realm—this is called the bodhisattva's first difficult dhyāna. Relying on dhyāna, the bodhisattva generates immeasurable, innumerable, inconceivable, profound samādhis, surpassing all śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas—this is called the second difficult dhyāna. Relying on dhyāna, the bodhisattva attains unexcelled awakening—this is called the third difficult dhyāna.
