Ninth: absolute emptiness. Absolute emptiness: using the previous eight emptinesses to dismantle all dharmas to their absolute exhaustiveness and purity is named 'absolute.' If there are no dharmas, there is also no absolute to be attached to, hence it is called absolute emptiness. Another explanation is: 'absolute' is named 'final'; contemplating that this final dharma is also unapprehendable, one does not grasp at having an ultimate dharma; this is called absolute emptiness. Thus the Lotus Sūtra says: 'Down to ultimate nirvāṇa, constantly possessing the characteristic of quiescence, it ultimately returns to emptiness.'
