Answer: "That text first realizes the fundamental stillness in the sense faculties and objects; after sustained effort, when awareness of extinction is forgotten in confrontation, the single thought-moment of luminous awareness finally becomes manifest. Thus we know that that single thought-moment is entirely revealed through wondrous cessation. Otherwise, why would the single thought-moment become manifest only after the five thoughts have ceased? Just consider how the five thoughts could cease; how can that corresponding single thought-moment be likened to the kṣaṇa thought-moment here? Moreover, śamatha separately uses wondrous cessation to settle the mind, vipaśyanā separately uses wondrous contemplation to settle the mind, and only upekṣā combines cessation and contemplation as a whole; therefore, the single thought-moment in the section identifying the contemplation essence is precisely the single thought-moment of consciousness of the skandhas here. Why? In the preface of that text, it first harmonizes concentration and wisdom as having the same source, and in the spontaneous nature [section] it says: 'Therefore, identical with mind is the Way'—this may be called tracing the stream to find its source. Therefore, identifying the contemplation essence, it says: 'Only know that a single thought-moment is empty and not empty, neither empty nor not empty.' Saying 'only know' means directly realizing (which is cessation) and comprehending (which is contemplation) principle. The present kṣaṇa is the principle of the three truths; there is no need exclusively to obliterate sense faculties and objects to reveal its luminous awareness, nor is there any need deeply to investigate condition-arising to seek its empty stillness; hence it says 'only know'—this is 'identical with mind is the Way'. If, upon completing the contemplation of śamatha, the single thought-moment of self-nature is revealed, what need would there be to cultivate the three contemplations further?"
