初、標。修謂修治造作,即變造三千,性謂本有不改,即理具三千,今示全性起修則諸行無作,全修在性則一念圓成,是則修外無性、性外無修,互泯互融故稱不二,而就心法妙為門。

First, the introduction. Cultivation means cultivation, correction, and active creation—namely, the three thousand realms created by transformation. Nature means originally existing and unalterable—namely, the three thousand realms inherent in principle. Here it is shown that when cultivation arises entirely from nature, all practices are non-active; when cultivation resides entirely in nature, the single thought-moment is perfectly realized. Thus, outside of cultivation there is no nature, and outside of nature there is no cultivation. Since they are mutually eliminated and mutually merged, it is called nondual, and taking the subtlety of the mental dharma as the gate.
