Third, from "clearness and turbidity..." down, the application: the waves and wetness of water constantly have neither increase nor decrease, whereas its clearness and turbidity must each arise from conditions. Although when an elephant enters it becomes turbid, and when a [water-purifying] jewel enters it becomes clear, yet the conditions for turbidity exist together with the water. Because one has never been awakened from the beginning, turbidity comes first; just as a mountain contains jade, or sand contains gold, the ore and the unworked jade fundamentally exist. Although water is fundamentally turbid, turbidity is not the nature of water; therefore its entire substance is clear. Because the two waves of clearness and turbidity share only one moving nature, it says 'the principle pervades'; and both are entirely wetness acting as movement, so it says 'the entire substance is function.' Since after awakening one is no longer deluded, one knows that clearness is the nature of water: what contradicts the nature can be transformed, while what accords with the nature is permanent."
