First, clarifying that the three stages are fundamentally subtle. In the three stages of principle [identity] and so forth, the characteristics of integration are not yet manifest. Just as a person of the five grades, although using contemplation of principle to integrate all universally, is not yet sovereign in phenomenal functioning. If it is still thus in this stage, the preceding two can be known [to be likewise]. Yet while deluded feelings make their own distinctions, the nondual natural reality is therefore said to be "one's own possession." "Self" is one's own mind; "other" refers to sentient beings and Buddhas. The Buddha is solely in the fruit, while the other two are in the cause. Even if the fruit subsuming mind and beings derives from cultivation and realization, the mind's ability to subsume the two derives entirely from the integration of the nature. Ascribing the efficacy to the principle, it thus says "hence causes."
