The Ten Gates of Nonduality originally comes from the Shiqian; why should it require notes and explanations? Yet lecturers of this lineage have either explained it or annotated it, composing numerous writings, while the phenomena and principle remain unclear, and understanding and practice have nowhere to rely. Jingxi's wondrous understanding has, on the contrary, become obscured in our time, and the Tiantai perfect lineage brings no benefit to beings. Hereupon, during the course of lecturing, I have explained it in response to those [commentaries], entitling it "Notes Pointing to the Essentials" (Zhiyao chao). It simply points to the momentary mind as the essential of phenomena and principle, understanding and practice. It is merely prepared for students to review; how dare I expect accomplished scholars to examine it in detail? Authored on the ninth day of the first month in the year Jiachen, the first year of Jingde of the Great Song (1004 CE).
