Second, examining and determining the shared teaching. Question: The shared teaching expounds morality, meditation, and wisdom—how is that not the Tripiṭaka teaching? It expounds knowledge of the modes of the path—how is that not the distinctive teaching? It expounds sarvākārajñatā—how is that not the perfect teaching? Answer: Although there seem to be these three teachings, upon examining the meaning they do not hold. Why is this? The shared teaching expounds non-arising morality, meditation, and wisdom as having one mark, which is markless, unlike the separate and different marks of morality, meditation, and wisdom in the Tripiṭaka. Furthermore, once attained, they are not lost; receiving its name from what is superior, it does not establish the name of Tripiṭaka, but receives the name of the shared teaching. Although it expounds knowledge of the modes of the path, it merely illuminates conventional truth within the realms, and does not expound the knowledge of the modes of the path of the Tathāgatagarbha and the Buddha-dharmas numerous as the sands of the Ganges; therefore the meaning of the distinctive teaching does not hold. Even though it also expounds sarvākārajñatā, it merely illuminates the two truths within the realms to clarify sarvākārajñatā, and does not illuminate the sarvākārajñatā of the inconceivable two truths of the middle way; therefore the meaning of the perfect teaching does not hold. Thus the meanings of the three teachings do not hold, and it is named solely the shared teaching.
