Fifth, interpreting the meaning of "Pure and Stainless Fame" (Vimalakīrti) in terms of the stages of the perfect teaching: If the Great Being Vimalakīrti occupies the stage of a successor to the dharmakāya, this is precisely the stainless vajra stage of equal awakening; his wisdom is about to become full like the moon on the fourteenth day, and fundamental ignorance is about to be exhausted like the moon on the twenty-ninth day. Hence the Zhìdù lùn states: "Samantabhadra and Mañjuśrī also possess the ten powers and four fearlessnesses, like the moon on the fourteenth day. The Buddha is also fully endowed with the ten powers and four fearlessnesses, like the moon on the fifteenth day." Because the principle of dharmatā is revealed, it is called "pure"; because the defilements of fundamental ignorance are about to be exhausted, it is called "stainless." The wisdom of equal awakening tallies with principle, being fully luminous, and illuminates according to capacity; hence it is called "pure and stainless fame." This, then, is a stage neighboring wondrous awakening. If we discuss perfect response, extending even to manifesting bodies of the ten dharma realms throughout the Buddha lands of the ten directions to accomplish the eight aspects of achieving enlightenment, [here] in this land it was appropriate to manifest the form of a successor; therefore, abiding in the realm of Akṣobhya Buddha as a bodhisattva successor, he came to roam the Sahā world, rebuking all the bodhisattvas, who all claimed they were incapable of inquiring after his illness—this was precisely using the perfect to shatter the partial. Furthermore, that he expounded the entrance to the Dharma gate of non-duality by remaining solely silent signifies that the Dharma gate of internal realization of the perfect teaching cannot be spoken or shown.
