Fourth, explaining the stage of Pure Stainless Fame (Vimalakīrti) in terms of the stages of the distinctive teaching: Since Vimalakīrti is a Mahāsattva bound to one last birth, he is in the position of an immaculate bodhisattva of the diamond mind of equal enlightenment, abiding in the dharmakāya. The principle of Buddha-nature is manifest; hence it is called 'pure.' Both the active afflictions and karmic impressions of distinctive delusions are exhausted; the remaining impressions of fundamental ignorance are like faint smoke—though they exist, they are as if non-existent; hence it is called 'stainless.' Extreme-limit wisdom is fulfilled; internally it accords with profound principle, externally its functioning is limitless, the dharmadhātu is equitable, and he responds to conditions to carry out conversion; hence it is called 'fame' (acclaim / according with). Thus he is named 'Pure Stainless Fame' (Vimalakīrti). How could this be identical to explaining the meaning of Pure Stainless Fame according to the Tripiṭaka and shared teachings? As for why his teaching traces manifested as identical to the stage bound to one last birth, it was to reprimand the three vehicles of the shared teaching and to admit [practitioners] into the Mahāyāna of the distinctive teaching.
