First, the difference in determining higher and lower in terms of severing ignorance: In clarifying stages according to the distinctive teaching, after exhausting the fetters within the realms throughout the thirty minds, one subdues ignorance beyond the realms; only at the final mind of the dedication [stages] does one generate true wisdom in the first bhūmi and sever one grade of ignorance, and so on up to severing ten grades, which is called the ten bhūmis; only at the final mind of equal enlightenment is ignorance exhausted; the eternal fruit of wondrous enlightenment is aloof and transcendent beyond all defilements with nothing left to sever. This is as explained before. As clarified by the perfect teaching, from the initial mind of rejoicing, cultivating the threefold contemplation in one mind to enter the stage of the ten faiths, having exhausted the delusions within the realms, one subdues ignorance beyond the realms; at the initial mind of the ten abodes one generates true wisdom and severs the first grade of the entrenchment of ignorance; from this point through the forty minds, one constantly severs ignorance, until at the final mind of equal enlightenment ignorance is completely exhausted; the ultimate stage of wondrous enlightenment is serene and transcendent beyond all defilements, called ultimate bodhi, unexcelled nirvāṇa. This is the distinction in determining the heights of the stages; hence there are differences in clarifying stages between the two teachings, perfect and distinctive.
