Next, the shared teaching is explained. "Shared" means identical. Because in this teaching the causes and fruits of the three vehicles are broadly identical, it is called the shared teaching. Hence the sūtra says: "One who wishes to attain the three vehicles ought to study Prajñāpāramitā." The treatise says: "For śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas, the paths of liberation and nirvāṇa are all attained from Prajñāpāramitā." The three persons jointly traverse the ten stages; the three persons identically sever views and deliberations. Before, there are no designations of the seven worthies; after, there is neither virtual enlightenment nor wondrous enlightenment. Although what is realized is identical to the Tripiṭaka [teaching], their methods of contemplation differ in skillfulness and clumsiness. In the shared teaching, realizing the aggregates themselves to be the real is called skillful; in the Tripiṭaka teaching, analyzing the aggregates before reaching the real is called clumsy. This is the contrast between skillfulness and clumsiness within the realms. Although this contrast exists, from here on the three teachings all belong to the Great Vehicle (Mahāyāna). Although the name "Great" is the same, whether regarding stages or practices, in numerical categories, number, depth, and shallowness, they are as far apart as heaven [and earth].
