The twenty-seventh fascicle of the *Nirvāṇa Sūtra* states: 'On the Snow Mountains there is a grass named forbearance; if a cow grazes on it, it directly produces ghee.' The grass exemplifies the eightfold noble path; being able to cultivate the eightfold noble path, one directly perceives the buddha-nature. This metaphor corresponds to the perfect teaching directly producing ghee without passing through the four flavors.
