These five grades are all stages of external ordinary beings, provisionally named the five grades. Once becoming increasingly luminous and tranquil, one suddenly penetrates hearing-wisdom, thoroughly comprehending without obstruction, with deep faith hard to shake; one then enters the ten faiths, the internal ordinary stage of the purification of the six sense faculties. The afflictions of views and deliberations are naturally eliminated first, just as in smelting iron to make a vessel, the coarse dross is exhausted first. Therefore the Benevolent King Prajñā says: 'A bodhisattva of the ten goods arouses the great mind, parting forever from the ocean of suffering's wheel in the three realms.' This equals the buddha fruit stage of the Tripiṭaka and shared teachings, and equals the ten dedications of the distinct teaching. Although the name of faith is the same as in the distinct teaching, the persons and practices are ever so different in depth; the abodes, practices, dedications, and stages are also like this. The stages of the perfect worthies conclude.
