Third: The method. When the preceding preparatory expedients are fully mastered and ripened, and one looks up with eager thirst, not sparing body or life, determine a date and time to practice the ritual in the bodhimaṇḍa. The initial entry begins on the second day of the month. As for the number of practice companions, it should be ten people or fewer. Smear the ground with scented clay, lay out an unrestricted circular altar, and decorate it with colorful paintings in imitation of a pure land. Burn incense, scatter flowers, hang five-colored canopies and various silk banners, invite twenty-four images, and set out foods of a hundred flavors. Three times a day, bathe, put on clean clothes, hold an incense burner, and with single-minded focus make a prostration; kneeling on alternate knees, direct your thoughts: contemplate that this cloud of incense completely covers the ten directions, universally raining down all treasures, all flavors, clothing, bedding, multistoried pavilions, and palaces, with stringed instruments emitting the sounds of Dharma, offering above to all the sages and bestowing below upon sentient beings, relying on the Buddha's spiritual power to perform Buddha-work extensively, benefiting all to enter the Buddha Path, equal to empty space and the Dharma realm. Having made this contemplation, one should reverently invite the Three Jewels, letting each sound guide one's thought while tears stream down one's face, as if facing the place of death seeking great power.
