Donglin Monastery on Mount Kuang in Jiangzhou was founded by Dharma Master Huiyuan of Yanmen under the Eastern Jin. Yuan was the foremost disciple of Dao'an, whose fame filled the heavens; An was the disciple of the Great Upādhyāya Fotudeng. The three virtues succeeded one another like the sun, moon, and stars; they were true pillars and beams of the Buddha-Dharma, all inconceivable persons. Moreover, Yuan was inwardly versed in the half-word and full-word teachings, and outwardly mastered the Three Mysteries; his virtue spread to distant lands, and his fame rose high into the clouds. When he first arrived at the foot of the mountain, he took shelter in a grove, practicing dhūta beneath it together with Dhyāna Master Yaśa, cultivating contemplation of the Western Pure Land in both speech and silence. Later, he established a saṃghārāma to the right of the grove, and because of this named it Donglin Monastery. Yuan personally founded the two terraces of Prajñā and the Buddha's Shadow; Xie Lingyun excavated three flowing ponds; and Emperor Xiaoyuan of the Liang constructed a multi-storied pavilion. The adornments of the monastery buildings remain intact to this day. As for Fengding Monastery, Dhyāna Master Huijing, the Fast-Keeper, was moved by the invitation of a mountain dweller and thus dwelt upon its peak. Next, Huigui of the Liang ascended later and only then built the saṃghārāma. On the peak there was a spring that suddenly dried up; Gui burned incense and made a vow, and the pure stream filled to overflowing; on the day of the Mahāparinirvāṇa, heaven sent down sweet dew. For these reasons, the renowned traces of former worthies have bequeathed an unbroken fragrance. The pines and clouds are clear and spacious, and every place is tranquil; among both officials and commoners coming and going, there is none who does not take refuge here. Since the Great Sui transformed the region east of the Yangtze, I, a poor monk, arrived at that mountain, rested and lodged at Donglin, and from time to time wandered to the summit of the peak, treating years as days, admiring and enjoying it so much as to forget all weariness. However, the saṃghārāma at the foot of the mountain is particularly close to the post road, and travelers coming and going create quite a disturbance. I now respectfully request that you become the dānapati for both monasteries, so that relying upon your influence, the assembly may find peace of mind, offering worship and recitation with sincere devotion to repay your vast bounty. Furthermore, I beg you to order the authorities concerned to permanently prohibit officials and private travelers from lodging there. The śramaṇa [Zhiyi] respectfully states.
