Letter to Chan'ge Monastery: The spring season is about to depart; how is your health? Is the saṃgha pure and well? The Buddhist monasteries of Mount Kuang originated with Dharma Master Huiyuan. The Dharma Master took as master Dao'an, whose fame filled the heavens; An took as master Fotudeng. Their wondrous virtues succeeded one another, none greater than the other. The collections of the Dharma east of the Yangtze all stem from Yanmen. When the Superior Man of Yanmen first left his traces on Mount Lu, from the Liang through the Jin there was only Donglin; in the late Chen, as manners declined, Chan'ge was separately established. When monks take delight in differences, how can this be called the utmost harmony? Now that the Wise One (Zhizhe) has come to dwell there, they must be united once more; I imagine that sharing the ocean of vows, there will be no differing tastes. As a traveler is about to set out, I send this message. Yang Guang bows his head. Twenty-first day of the third month.
