Your disciple Zongchi bows his head. The trusted attendant, Chuanyou Shen, has returned. I received your message of the first day of last month, which brought comfort to my lingering longing. The heat is still intense; I pray that your bodily health is peaceful and harmonious. I look up and understand that you passed through Mount She and the peaks of Mount Zhong, where the monasteries and pagodas are safe and sound, and the disciples harmonious and disciplined; you still left twenty monks temporarily at Kaishan, and proceeded to Mount Kuang to enter the summer retreat (varṣā). Donglin and Chan'ge have been united as one monastery once more, and all at the Fengding hermitage likewise rejoice. By reverently taking this as a cause for exhortation, we obtain this spiritual cultivation, weeding the field of the body so that the Dharma rain may flow; for the blessings of the Suvarṇaprabhāsa Sūtra, my joy and gratitude are all the deeper. Your disciple only crossed Zhufang on the fourteenth day of last month. The climate being unfamiliar and the season melting metals, my bodily care was often out of balance, and I frequently felt weak. Since arriving at Shitou on the twenty-ninth, I have gradually recovered. Ever since my heart was separated from you at Jiangpu, my feelings have sped toward Mount Kuang, treating days as years, not forgetting you for a single moment. I hope that before ending the summer retreat you will prepare your baggage in advance, and when the Dharma year is full, immediately float westward; let the fulfillment of your vows there be undertaken with haste. Not only does your disciple with obscured understanding hope for your protection, but everywhere there is deep apprehension, and the students of dhyāna and wisdom all yearn to look up to you. When Confucius was in Chen, he uttered a sigh and returned to Lu; so bending your path and accommodating your feelings is not for yourself alone. I now dispatch Registrar Wang Guan directly to attend upon you, and also present a separate dispatch to express my mindful inquiries, daring to dispense with verbose words. Respectfully bowing my head. First day of the seventh month.
