Your disciple Zongchi bows his head. An envoy from the Donglin mountain monastery arrived, delivering your instruction of the eighth day of the eighth month, which brought comfort to my anxious thoughts. I respectfully learn that you have already gone to Mount Heng, where your stay must be somewhat long; when the Dharma connection is concluded, I hope you will immediately follow the current, anticipating with certainty that in the depths of the year we shall meet. Since your disciple returned across the river, early last month I moved to my new residence; there were many hasty affairs and things are not yet properly settled. Your incoming instruction exhorted me regarding Dharma matters, which truly made me feel ashamed and apprehensive. I have just established the Huiri Bodhimaṇḍa in the outer court of my residence, installing Dhyāna Master Zhao and those below him; Lecture Master Lun of Jiangling has also arrived from afar. In the inner court, I established the Fayun Bodhimaṇḍa, installing Dhyāna Master Jue of Tanzhou and those below him; having established these excellent [works], I take the liberty of informing you. I respectfully learn that you have successively undertaken meritorious deeds on my behalf; feeling deeply indebted for your support, it is difficult to express it from afar. Yet dispatching someone from here to Jiangzhou to request provisions for the monks, how could that be of mutual help? As for the previously donated salt and rice: let the rice be turned over to Donglin; as for the salt, once it has traveled the upper road and produced a surplus, you may use it to undertake other meritorious deeds. Now that the mountain monks are returning, their travel expenses are respectfully reimbursed; I shall soon send a separate envoy to welcome you, and hope you will make preparations for your return in advance. The rivers and mountains are distant; how could I exhaust the sincerity of my heart? Respectfully bowing my head. Tenth day of the tenth month.
