On the third day of the tenth month of the first year of Renshou, the disciple of the late Zhizhe of Tiantai Monastery, the Śramaṇa Zhiyue, and the entire community memorialize: We have humbly heard that when Nāgārjuna passed away, a saṃghārāma was erected for him in India; when Baozhi died, Kaishan [Monastery] was extensively repaired in the Liang kingdom. This is truly because the fundamental vows of bodhisattvas mutually reveal and inspire each other, while ordinary śrāvakas merely know to praise them. We humbly reflect upon our late Upādhyāya: endowed with inconceivable virtue, he served as a teacher of gods and humans; entering nirvāṇa in tranquil dhyāna, he manifested a rare event. Reading and examining the sūtras and vinaya, such is heard only once in a thousand years; his wondrous virtue was illustrious, flourishing in a sage era. We humbly reflect that you honor the master and revere the Dharma, and thus have renovated the saṃghārāma; the site of its establishment accords profoundly with the features of the mountains. Our late master once said: 'This ground must await an auspicious condition.' Recalling this prediction, it converges entirely with today. The monastery is situated within five peaks and flanged by the currents of two mountain streams; its halls and pavilions are splendid and spacious, its rooms and chambers solemn and secluded—comparable to a pure land, fitting for assembling immortals. Since its completion, our late master has constantly cast his shadow and traces; though the sacred realm is distant, wherever there is a stimulus, there is a response. Having raised the stupa and shrine, he therefore manifested spiritual marvels, thereby showing that all Buddhas equally gather and embrace [all beings]. Zhiyue and the others are mediocre and shallow, having errantly joined the ranks of his disciples; looking up, we feel ashamed before the pillars and beams, and looking down, we exert our heart and strength. Constantly within the monastery we cultivate separate fasts and repentances, always dedicated to dhyāna and prostrations, hoping to rely upon this permeation and cultivation to repay your sage benevolence, unable to contain our joy and gratitude. We reverently dispatch the envoys Guanding and Zhizao to present this memorial in thanksgiving. Reverently submitted.
