On the seventeenth day Bingyin of the twelfth month, the year Xiyou, the first year of the Renshou era of the Sui (601 CE). The Bodhisattva-precept disciple, the Crown Prince Zongchi, bows his head in salutation and respectfully addresses the seat of the spiritual shrine of the whole-body relic of the late master Zhizhe at the monastery of Mount Tiantai, saying: I have humbly heard that human beings depend on three [father, ruler, and teacher] and serve them as one; all rely on the sacred models to achieve the virtues of worthies. Had Yan Hui not met Confucius, how could he have come close [to sagehood]? Had Yin Xi not encountered Laozi, how could he have attained longevity? How much more so when boarding the boat of prajñā and gazing at the shore of bodhi: without an enlightened guide, how could one reach the place of treasures? Moreover, relying on the monk envoys, we have together approached the Dharma city—this is what is called benefiting oneself and benefiting others, aiding both oneself and another, with both master and disciple fully endowed with wisdom and severance. Furthermore, I have heard that when Grand Tutor Shu announced his retirement, the Crown Prince presented him with gold; when Master Huan resigned, funeral garments were displayed in the household. These are all conditioned acts, modest expressions of repaying kindness within the realm; how could they reach the boundless transcendental realm and fully recompense the master's power? I, your disciple, planted virtuous roots in past lives and received your holy teaching early on; my physical precepts and mental wisdom have been polished like bright pearls, and the parched ears of grain and cold water chestnuts have all been moistened by sweet dew. Although time flows on and years pass into eternity, and birth and extinction cannot be recalled, in walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, I revere you in my heart as if you were present. Thereupon, in my obscurity, I was undeservedly listed as the Crown Prince; lacking talent to maintain the vessel, I have many fears about ascending to the position of the sun. Again receiving the imperial edict, having formerly served as an elder [governor], I have temporarily ceased overseeing state affairs to return and visit the imperial capital. Looking toward Tiantai, it was as if [the earth] welled forth from the ground: the monk envoys arrived in succession, and the auspicious signs at the shrine accumulated—like the wondrous Prabhūtaratna Stūpa and the wish-fulfilling divided bodies; the jade curl's golden light divided the night and shattered the darkness; snapping fingers in response to thought, hollow sounds appeared in the empty room. If there were only one of these, it would already be called a clear response; that all four should come together, how is this not rare? Since Tanguang sat and passed away, and since Daoyou attained realization in the flesh, Xinggong flying his staff could not praise it, and Lingyun residing in the mountains never had such an event. How magnificent! This is the foundation of our Great Master's realization of the Way. How supreme! This is the year of harvest for our fertile field. The Book of Odes says: 'No word goes unrequited; no virtue goes unrepaid.' The sūtras state that knowing kindness and repaying kindness is what all Buddhas do. Although in recent years I have followed your admonitions and constructed Jetavana, I am much ashamed of the gold-spreading; simply relying on the mountain buildings, I hope to share with one mind the pure realm and the adornment of the excellent land. Fortunately, the assembly of monks is complete and their spiritual cultivation unceasing; with deep unseen assistance, my human efforts are put to shame. Now I dispatch the Supernumerary Cavalier Attendant Gentleman concurrently Receptionist Zhang Qianwei to escort the monk envoys Guanding and others back to the mountain, to hold a feast at the monastery, bowing down and touching the feet of all the Three Jewels of the ten directions and the three periods of time, boundless, both hidden and manifest. May the present grand assembly use this merit to look up and assist the late master Zhizhe in swiftly realizing right awakening. As shown by the proofs at the end of his life, he has already been born in Sukhāvatī; recently leaving auspicious signs, he has long manifested Amitābha, following the footsteps of Avalokiteśvara, standing shoulder to shoulder with Mahāsthāmaprāpta, turning his eyes eastward without abandoning the sahā world, and casting his gaze down upon the southern continent of Jambudvīpa, ever pitying the land of Cīnasthāna. Even the vast ocean does not reject trickling streams; how could the towering heights of Song and Hua obstinately turn away fine dust? Daring to present humble offerings, I pray you will deign to accept them, thereby causing the boundless Dharma body to fully receive the sweet dew, and the immeasurable transformation-reflections to all partake of the ghee. Feeding on nirvāṇa, it cannot be exhausted; tasting prajñā, it is never depleted. May my mindful effort follow my master's Way, dispel my afflictions, and fulfill my vows; in the present and the future, may you long grant deliverance, and may my family, the state, and my relatives all enter the Mahāyāna, subtly coming and secretly going, ever casting your shadow and echo, dissolving and dispelling worldly afflictions and hindrances, ultimately equal to empty space, and completely perfect like the Dharma realm. This is the Great Master's superior power, borne by all Buddhas; I, your disciple, receive your compassion, bringing forth the Tathāgatagarbha, without departing from words to seek liberation, for the nature of words is liberation itself. Not clinging to the world like a lotus flower, ever skillfully entering into empty and quiescent practice, penetrating the marks of all phenomena without hindrance, I bow my head to that which is like empty space, without reliance.
