The monk envoys Guanding and Zhizao have arrived; I have read the letter of the third day of the eleventh month, which also recounted the spiritual shrine's responding traces—manifesting form and emitting light, snapping fingers and producing sound, resounding in response to thought. This is truly the inconceivable power transforming in many ways to inspire those with affinities, displaying a rare event; careful at the end and pursuing the distant, my deep emotional sighs are profound. In the past, at the Twin Trees, the manifestation of extinction was not extinction; the solitary Stūpa of Prabhūtaratna welled forth awaiting its time; at the Wolf-foot [mountain], Kāśyapa divided his body, and at Vulture Peak, Śākyamuni left his shadow. The light radiating from between the eyebrows and the finger-snapping shaking the room—how could the semblance teaching not be able to deliver boundlessly? Meeting a good spiritual friend is a great cause and condition; perpetually reflecting on having received your masterly model in the past, your virtuous voice fills my ears and your spiritual light is before my eyes. Now relying on these spiritual omens, I shall follow in the footsteps of bodhi, reverently receiving your spiritual admonitions and touring to comfort the southern regions. The mountain assembly and Dharma disciples are friends with the same purpose; gathered as equal companions, we share the boat and voyage together. In this cold freeze at year's end, I reflect that all of you excel in the Way. Mount Tiantai is a famous peak renowned across the seas; in constructing the great forest [monastery], I am much ashamed before the multi-storied pavilions. With offerings made in the three periods, the four requisites are not complete; I imagine you relish the joy of dhyāna to share in the delight of the Dharma, and meanwhile news of revering virtue and sending letters will continue. Now I dispatch the Supernumerary Cavalier Attendant Gentleman Zhang Qianwei to escort the monk envoys back to the mountain, to set up an offering at the old site, hoping it may, like sweet dew, transform the coarse and astringent, and relying on Xiangji [Fragrant Accumulation] to realize the fusion of the Way. A letter cannot exhaust my words, and apart from this, there are no details. Yang Guang bows in salutation. Itemized list of offerings now accepted by the monk envoys Guanding and others. Respectfully presented on the seventeenth day of the twelfth month of the first year of the Renshou era: One stone incense burner (together with three incense boxes), one large bronze bell, one patchwork kāṣāya robe of kite-colored cloth, two patchwork sleeveless vests of kite-colored cloth, seven banners of forty-nine feet, one yellow silk skirt, two hundred felt rugs, two silk cloth saṃkakṣikās, one hundred small banners, two boxes of blended incense, one basket of walnuts, three hundred bolts of clothing cloth, one box of dried apple grain, one box of rock salt, six jars of ghee.
