The Right Mentor of the Crown Prince Zhang Heng proclaimed the edict: The two masters, the monks Huizhuang and Falun of the Huiri Bodhimaṇḍa, were lecturing on the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa Sūtra in the Eastern Palace, entirely relying on Zhizhe's commentary to analyze and explain the scripture. Twice a day [the Crown Prince] personally attended and listened. He ordered the Yangzhou Area Command to dispatch the Adjutant Zhang Xie to Tiantai [to summon] one person thoroughly versed in Zhizhe's teaching on the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Sūtra, who was to bring the commentary and enter the capital upon the envoy's arrival at the monastery. The monastery designated Guanding to accompany the envoy in compliance with the command. When the commentary arrived, it was handed over to the bureau for copying; once the copying was completed, it was given to Guanding for collation; and having been collated, it entered the palace to be received and upheld. The Right Mentor Zhang Heng proclaimed the edict, introducing Guanding to enter, take leave, and be received in audience. On the eighteenth day of the eighth month of the second year of Renshou, the edict stated: 'I, your disciple, esteem the Dharma teachings of the late Master, and therefore have troubled you with this toil. You too, Master, must act for the sake of the Dharma and not decline. Now I dispatch the Commander-in-Chief Duan Zhixing to escort you back to the monastery. Please pay my respects to the assembly; may they properly practice the Path in reliance upon the late Master's methods, and not diminish his reputation. Farewell, and here are offerings: three hundred and twenty sets of Dharma robes of flying-dragon damask, two bottles of butter from ox-ghee and cat-ghee, and one picul of Guangming salt.' The Right Mentor Zhang Heng proclaimed the edict, separately bestowing items upon Guanding: an image of Maitreya made of gold thread together with flanking attendant bodhisattvas, surrounded by holy monks, seven woven altar-cloths of the fifty-three Buddhas, two woven scripture bags, one hundred catties of frankincense, and one catty of mixed storax incense. Furthermore, a letter was ordered to be sent in a case to the assembly, and the Yangzhou Administrative Adjutant Cai Ke was dispatched to arrive and hold a vegetarian feast for one thousand monks for the sake of Zhizhe.
