The bodhisattva-precept disciples Chen Zixiu and others of the Eastern Cliff of Daoyin Monastery bow their heads in homage. We venture to consider that the Dharma-gate is non-dual and that the principle is beyond speech and thought; yet responding to illness and according with capacity, it is expounded through provisional names and marks. Although constantly abiding in quiescent cessation, it broadly displays dignified deportment; without rising from the bodhimaṇḍa, one personally ascends to sovereign mastery. When the teachings are discussed, they encompass breadth and narrowness; when traces appear, they manifest shallowness and depth. Universally, they serve as a ferry-bridge for the conscious and an oar of a boat for sentient beings. As for guiding them, none does not take skillful means as foremost; as for uplifting them, none does not take parables as the basis. Children in the burning house recognized the three carts and vied to get out; the poor hired son realized that the dung and filth could be cleared away. We respectfully contemplate that the Dhyāna Master dwells in an unfathomable station and cherishes an all-pervading mind; your Way penetrates the three emptinesses, and your wisdom ascends the hundred dharmas. We venture to wish to invite you to expound the single work of the Lotus Sūtra. Zhanqin and the Earl of Shao only set forth small merits and slight accomplishments, yet they still promulgated governance beneath the shade of the sweet pear and spread moral influence under the willows; how much more should you, who personally received the three dots and loftily cultivate the six perfections, surely deign to condescend to our sincere devotion and turn your mind toward our earnest longing? When the Han Emperor visited Baishui, it prospered; when he sang the 'Great Wind' at the mulberry well, it was admirable. You should not remain silent. May you cause high and low, noble and base, all to recognize the One Vehicle, and large leaves and small branches equally to receive the compassionate moisture. Fortunately, let those who dig a well on high ground swiftly see the vast spring, and those sleeping drunk in confusion once again recognize the old jewel. We have ventured to express the feelings of the multitude, without knowing how to state them fully. Respectfully requested. The tenth day of the eighth month in the thirteenth year of Kaihuang.
