In the wuwu year, the fourth year of the Datong era of Emperor Wu of the Liang, the Dhyāna Master was one year of age. His father was of the Chen clan, an Enfeoffed Marquis of the State and a native of Huarong in Jingzhou. His mother, Lady Xu, conceived him upon dreaming of fragrant clouds and swallowing a white mouse. When he was born, a divine light filled the room, and his eyes had double pupils. At the age of seven, he delighted in going to saṅghārāmas; a monk recited the "Universal Gate Chapter" orally to him once, and as for the remaining words and sentences that he had not yet heard, he was spontaneously able to penetrate them. His parents would not permit him to go often. In the first year of the Chengsheng era of Emperor Yuan of the Liang, at fifteen years of age, he wished to leave the household, but both parents would not consent; thereupon he carved a sandalwood image and reverently chanted [before it]. One day, just as he was bowing to the Buddha, he dimly dreamt of a mountain overlooking the great sea, with a monk dwelling on top beckoning to him. In the first year of the Shaotai era of Emperor Jing of the Liang, at eighteen years of age, having completed mourning for both parents, he firmly took leave of his elder brother to leave the household. Thereupon he relied on the monk Faxu of Guoyuan Monastery in Xiangzhou as his master, and was given the name Zhiyi, courtesy name De'an. In the first year of the Yongding era of High Ancestor Emperor Wu of the Chen, at twenty years of age, he received the upasampadā and, relying on Vinaya Master Huikuang, thoroughly mastered the Vinaya Piṭaka. Before receiving the upasampadā, he had turned north to rely on [masters] to study the vaipulya [teachings]. In the first year of the Tianxi era of Emperor Wen of the Chen, at twenty-three years of age, he went to Mount Dasu in Guangzhou to rely on Dhyāna Master Si. The master recognised that they had been together in the assembly on Gṛdhrakūṭa, and revealed to him the Samantabhadra bodhimaṇḍa. For two times seven days he recited the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Sūtra, and in tranquil stillness attained great awakening. In the first year of the Guangda era of the Deposed Emperor of the Chen, at thirty years of age, he took leave of his master and left for Jinling. He resided at Waguan Monastery for eight years, lecturing on the Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa, expounding the Ci di chan men, as well as the Fahua xuanyi. In the seventh year of the Taijian era of Emperor Xuan of the Chen, at thirty-eight years of age, he entered Tiantai; Emperor Xuan issued an edict to detain him, but he did not stay. At first he stopped at the Stone Bridge and then moved to Folong; the following year he subdued Māra at Huading. In the ninth year of the Taijian era, at forty years of age, Emperor Xuan by imperial edict bestowed [the name of] Xiuchan Monastery. In the thirteenth year of the Taijian era, at forty-four years of age, he lectured on the Suvarṇaprabhāsa Sūtra; fishermen abandoned their weirs, and a life-release pond was established. The following year, the King of Yongyang requested him to lecture. In the second year of the Zhide era of the Young Emperor of the Chen, at forty-eight years of age, he received an imperial edict to go to the Taiji Hall in Jinling to open [lectures on] the Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa and lecture on the Kāruṇikarāja Sūtra. The following year, the Crown Prince received the precepts. In the first year of the Zhenming era, at fifty years of age, he lectured on the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Sūtra at Guangzhai Monastery in Jinling. Zhang'an was just twenty-seven years of age at that time and heard the scripture's text for the first time. In the ninth year of the Kaihuang era of the Sui, at fifty-two years of age, the Chen fell; he went to Jing[zhou], was moved by a dream, and stopped at Mount Kuang. The following year, the Sui Emperor issued an edict of inquiry. At fifty-four years of age, the Prince of Jin requested him to come to Yang[zhou]. In the eleventh month, he conferred the precepts upon the Prince of Jin, and only then was he titled Zhizhe. At fifty-five years of age, he was able to travel to Jing and Xiang; passing through Mount Kuang again, he spent the summer retreat and then arrived first in Tan[zhou]. At fifty-six years of age, he arrived in Jing[zhou] to repay the kindness of the land and built Yuquan Monastery. Zhang'an respectfully received the Profound Meaning [Fahua xuanyi]. At fifty-seven years of age, he lectured on the Mohe zhiguan at Yuquan Monastery. At fifty-eight years of age, he went down from Jing[zhou] to Jinling, accepted the invitation of the Prince of Jin, and composed the Jingming shu. In the spring when he was fifty-nine years of age, he returned again to Tiantai. In the winter of the following year, the Prince of Jin sent a letter devoutly summoning him. At sixty years of age, he answered the summons; arriving before the stone image of Xinchang, he sat upright and entered extinction—it was the wei hour of the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month in the seventeenth year of the Kaihuang era. From his entering extinction to the yisi year, the twelfth year of the Chunxi era of the Song, 592 years have passed.
