Huiwen of Fengcheng Monastery, Faling of Longguang Monastery, Zhisheng of Guangzhai Monastery, and others bow their heads in reverence. We have observed that envoys have brought tallies to demolish various empty monasteries. From what we see before our eyes, whether intact or broken, with monks or without monks, no small number have been destroyed and eliminated. We humbly reflect that the Great King Bodhisattva has planted faith that is lofty and bright, established the Three Honored Ones, and transformed beings with benevolence: how could you not broadly protect the Buddha's Dharma and pay heed to stūpas and monasteries? But the monks of this area, suddenly witnessing this destruction and abandonment, all harbor worry and fear. Although the Great King's illumination is like the morning sun, his sage virtue is lofty and distant; the feelings of the multitude, though yearning, have no way to reach him. We humbly reflect that Dhyāna Master Zhizhe is the refuge of monastics and laypeople alike; whatever words or exhortations he makes, goodness always comes first. Without considering our own mediocrity and insignificance, Wen and the others have hastened here to report this, earnestly hoping you will exercise great compassion and deign to convey this on our behalf, so that monasteries not yet destroyed may hopefully be preserved intact. Daring to rely on your protection and upkeep, we make this petition. Respectfully, we bow in reverence. Eighth day of the second month of the twelfth year of Kaihuang.
