It also said: 'Sentient beings of the lower realms are mostly attached to external form; hence they are largely directed to contemplate mind-only; it does not mean that the mind alone is principle.' This was because that teacher and disciple [Wu'en and you], seeing that the texts of the teachings often discuss the mental factor as fully creating all phenomena, directly explained the mental factor in terms of principle, thinking that the true mind follows conditions to create the phenomena of sentient beings and Buddhas; therefore, whenever they saw speaking of the true or discussing principle, they claimed it was already contemplating the mind. In order to refute this assertion, I cited the passage from the Si nianchu on sentient beings of the lower realms being attached to form, to make it known that sūtras and treatises mostly focus their discussions of contemplation on the mind in order to break the deluded attachments of sentient beings of the lower realms. Thus, it is to break the disease of attachment to form that contemplating the mind is frequently taught, not because the mind alone is principle that contemplating the mind is frequently taught.
