Now this text of the *Xuanyi* solely discusses the phenomenal characteristics of the ten kinds of fruits of realization, and does not indicate even in outline the standard model of contemplating the mind; how could practitioners gather and illuminate by themselves? This came about because you mistakenly inserted the words 'single thought-moment' and 'contemplative illumination'. Seeing for yourself that there was no text, and knowing yourself that there was no doctrine, you had no choice but to push it onto the practitioner. As for the phrase 'directly reveals the mind-nature', what could you do when you yourself had established that 'this text of the *Xuanyi* directly reveals the mind-nature'? Since you could not push this onto the practitioner, you completely dared not answer this question, and still secretly changed 'directly reveals the mind-nature' into 'directly reveals dharmatā'. If you had even a slight way to pivot, you would never have stealthily altered the wording; it was simply that your road had reached its dead end that it came to this.
