蓋上人平素不聞善知識隨時策觀也。縱聞講說，亦只對科披讀而已。還與自看，一般便謂須自看《止觀》，即能將彼正觀之心修事法觀也。

This is simply because the Superior has ordinarily never heard a good friend urge on contemplation according to the occasion. Even if you hear lectures, it is merely opening and reading according to the topical outline. It is just like reading by oneself, so you immediately claim that one must read the Zhiguan by oneself before one can take that mind of right contemplation to cultivate the contemplation of phenomenal teachings.
