I earnestly hope, Venerable Sir, that you will turn your mind toward the principle, cultivate merit to make up for your errors, join together to support the orthodox teaching, and bring far-reaching benefit to all sentient beings. Whether you agree or not, I swiftly hope for your reply. In your answers concerning the King of Sutras, your deception of your own mind is fully visible; in your replies regarding the intrinsic essence, your shifting stratagems become all the more evident. In the objects of contemplation of the two sutras, your words contradict themselves; to the scriptural passages on the two truths, you have repeatedly failed to reply. Although I have not yet been able to cross-examine in detail, I have briefly laid it out as above. I sincerely hope that you, Venerable Sir, will reflect upon the long suffering of the three retributions and keep in mind how fleeting the affairs of a single lifetime are, cast aside your self-view, and accord with that Dharma gate. Do not say that because your late master held this understanding for a long time and suffered no present misery, you should imitate him and follow in his footsteps. In his time, he naturally did not hear the correct meaning and genuinely held his own view without any deceitful intent. Or perhaps he first demonstrated a heterodox tenet so that the correct doctrine might later be brought to light. Now that you, Venerable Sir, have encountered the correct path, you must reform your deluded tenets. If you go against your own mind, you are certain to incur evil retribution. I diligently offer this exhortation and raise these words again and again, only wishing to bring brilliance to our fundamental school. Fearing that you, Venerable Sir, do not reflect upon future retribution, do not delay the days and seasons any longer; I sincerely hope you will swiftly show your approval or disapproval. Written in haste to convey my sincerity, failing to be fully exhaustive. Zhili, monk of the Dharma gate residing at Yanqing Abbey in Siming, bows in reverence.
