Our ancestor Zhizhe handed down words and established practice; his discourse emerged beyond ordinary sentiment and cannot be overtaken by those who have blind realisation or search through names. Unworthily inheriting this vast enterprise for many years, I have never for a moment slackened in practice or exposition. You have entered my gate for some time now; you have consulted and resolved delicate tenets, and your merit has already accumulated. Now, the ancient Huiyin Temple of Zhang'an in Tiantai respects your fine excellence and has constructed a new lecture cloister for you to transmit and uphold [the teaching]. I now confer upon you an incense burner and a ruyi scepter as implements for transmitting the Dharma. I desire that the fragrant virtue of the three trainings first pervade yourself, and that the skillful intention of the four siddhāntas subsequently suit the needs of living beings. Be cautious with them; do not brandish or hold them recklessly. Disregard fame and profit like mustard seeds; regard the harsh and the gentle as bandits. If you can act like this, you will slightly accord with my intention, nor will you fail the words and deeds of our ancestor, and you will also avoid causing vexation to arise in sentient beings. Expository Master Zejiao, do not betray my injunction. Second day of the first month, the second year of Tiansheng [1024]. Address by the Siming Seat Master (Monogram).
