In establishing its lineage, Tiantai demonstrates the teaching through the single principle of the partial and the perfect, and clarifies contemplation through the non-duality of objective realm and wisdom. Without the teaching, there is no way to give rise to understanding; without contemplation, there is no way to accomplish practice. Only when understanding and practice are both complete can one ascend to the realm of the noble and wise. Having long served this Path without slackening, students from across the four seas often arrive from afar. Expository Master Wencan first climbed to the hall of Dharma Master Xiang of Xingguo to discuss the great essentials and successfully establish meritorious work. Then Master Xiang, with his mind set upon the ultimate principle and his sentiment forgetting other and self, further commended your fondness for learning and commanded you to enter my chamber. Thereupon you were diligent in doctrinal teaching and contemplation day and night for many years. You were also able to keep your admired conduct pure and plain, matching your words. Now Master Xiang is putting the pagodas and temples in good order to carry on the legacy of the Three Jewels, and fearing that this would interfere with instructing disciples, he entrusts the lecturing to you. I praise Master Xiang for having an insight that transcends the world, and I further observe that you are a vessel for transmitting the Dharma; therefore I confer upon you a hand-held censer and an uttarāsaṅga, wishing that with each holding and each donning, you cause the fragrance of virtue to be rich and stillness and forbearance to be accomplished. In this way, how could the hair-ropes of gain and offerings and the poisoned arrows of fame and praise harm you? As for what was previously called ascending to the realm of the noble and wise, you indeed have a share in it. Expository Master Wencan, you should embody my intention. Given on the sixth day of the tenth month, the fourth year of Tiansheng of the Great Song [1026], address conferred by the Yanqing Seat Master (Zhili).
