四年己卯　時年二十歲。《行業記》曰：二十從本郡寶雲通法師傳天台業觀。始三日，首座謂之曰：《法界次第》汝當奉持。師曰：何謂法界？座曰：大總法相圓融無礙者是也。師曰：既圓融無礙，何有次第？座無對。居一月，自講《心經》，人皆駭聽而驚傳之。

Fourth year, jimao. At that time he was twenty years old. The Record of Conduct says: 'At twenty, he went to Dharma Master Tong of Baoyun in his home commandery to receive the Tiantai practices and contemplations. On the third day after his arrival, the head monk said to him: "You must uphold the Fajie cidi." The Master said: "What is meant by the dharma-realm?" The head monk said: "It is the great, all-inclusive phenomenal marks that are perfectly interfused and unimpeded." The Master said: "If they are already perfectly interfused and unimpeded, how can there be a sequence?" The head monk had no reply. After staying one month, the Master gave an exposition of the Hṛdaya Sūtra on his own; people were astonished to hear it and spread the word in amazement.'
