Thirty-eighth Question: The Jinbi says: 'The statement that wood and stone are without mind derives from the lesser school; the words on according with conditions while remaining unchanging arose in the great teaching.' In terms of what meaning does this divide the greater and lesser? If it is said to be half-word and full-word, the shared [teaching] has no statement on according with conditions while remaining unchanging, yet the separate [teaching] has the designation of wood and stone being without mind. If it is said to be ultimate and middle, the separate [teaching] has the same impediment as before. If it is said to be biased and perfect, the shared and separate teachings are definitely not the lesser school, so the impediment would be even greater.
