Answer: The practice of wisdom and the wonder of wisdom are truly different. This is because the wonder of wisdom discusses understanding comprehensively; hence the Shiqian states: 'Understanding is wisdom.' As for the practice of wisdom, wisdom is wondrous contemplation illuminating the wondrous principle without relying on auxiliary conditions; hence it is called the practice of wisdom. Thus, the wonder of wisdom is generating understanding based on principle, whereas the practice of wisdom is the practice of illuminating principle. Since practice and understanding are distinguished, they can be known to be different. Nevertheless, wisdom is the foundation of practice, so practice arises dependent on wisdom; practice can accomplish wisdom, so wisdom is accomplished dependent on practice. Practice and understanding support each other; neither can be dispensed with.
