On the fourth day of the second month in the spring of the first year of the Tianxi reign era, the Abbot of Yanqing brought forth thirty articles on the doctrinal teachings of the mountain school, and raising the crimson curtain, questioned his disciples. His words were concise and his purport extremely subtle, intended to inspire those without delusion to exert themselves in disseminating the teaching, and to rouse those lacking cleverness to strive diligently in study. The disciple Renyue gave spontaneous responses, which came together into an elegant composition. This was not to seek single-character praise from the state of Lu, but rather to request the admonition of the four choices of Wujin. Since it has already been transcribed, this preface is now written.
