Answer: The essence and nature of the Dharma realm is free from all false thoughts, its characteristics are equal to empty space, and it pervades everywhere. It pervades the dependent and pervades the primary; it pervades the sense faculties and pervades the sense objects; down to a single minute particle, there is none that is not the complete essence of the Dharma realm pervading. Alas, the multitude of living beings shackle this essence and falsely construct it into sentient and insentient realms. The sentient realm comprises the four forms of birth, the six paths, and those that move through water, land, and air; the insentient vessel comprises mountains, rivers, peaks, streams, grass, trees, and dense forests. Within the sentient division, they falsely calculate views of self and other, and therefore there are matters of distress and adversarial debts; since the vessel division lacks views of self and other, there is no fault of karmic encumbrance and retaliatory compensation. Such differences are entirely the false discriminations of the sphere of sentient beings. When we investigate the essence and nature of the Dharma realm, what distinction is there? Therefore Jingxi said: 'Even though dependent and primary retributions are produced, relying on principle there is ultimately no divergent path.' These words are true.
