Answer: In its pure fundamental nature, there is not even a single dharma that can confront consciousness, let alone speaking of matters of beatings and pain. It is only that true suchness does not keep its own nature and transforms into all dharmas, just as water from a single source divides into flowing tributaries—clear and turbid, moving and still, the oceans salty and the rivers fresh. Therefore, within it, self and others arise in contention, attraction and aversion are generated, the strong bully the weak, and attacks never cease. Your question now is precisely evaluating matters within delusion and falsity. One need only turn back from falsity and return to truth, turning away from dust and uniting with awakening; then one will understand that all sentient beings in the ten directions and the three periods of time share one identical Dharma body, one identical body and one identical wisdom, and powers and fearlessnesses are likewise so. When one reaches this point and realizes the equal nature of awakening, there are not even physical forms of self and other to be seen in turn—how could there still be discussion of winning or losing in worldly beatings?
