I, having placed my trust in Chongju, recently received your letter and learned that you are well and at peace. When you accepted Fushi Cloister, I still feared that the handing-over was not sufficiently clear, and moreover I had seen people from Qiantang speaking of many different complications. Now seeing the text of the official petition, its purport is very thorough and agreeable, and I am glad from the depths of my heart; this is evoked by your lifelong attention to doctrinal teaching and contemplation. May the perfect lineage of Zhizhe, through this, prevail greatly in that prefecture and guide those who come from afar. Yet, if it obtains the right person, the Way will vigorously rise; if it loses the right person, the Way will perish accordingly. The dissemination in Sanqu has its seed in your person: be careful never to be indolent; you should receive others with humility and regulate all beings through actual practice. If you do so, you will fulfill the intention of the academician who requested you, and repay the original wish of Lord Xun. You must, day and night, examine this carefully to achieve great benefit. Because that young fellow Renyue was mad and rash, rashly giving rise to deviant thoughts, holding what is wrong to be right, and refuting the real with the spurious, I feared that the world's people would raise slanders following him and confuse the great path; therefore, I forced myself to write twenty sheets to resolve it, so that he might slightly know what is gained and lost. Only because he was under my lectures for a long time, recording phrase by phrase, he waited to make grounds for dispute to adorn his self-view, completely failing to inquire into and examine the overarching structure, only expanding the door of vilification. Now, on account of other matters, I composed this letter to briefly reveal the profound meaning of our lineage. I now send you a draft copy; you should examine and savor it in detail. You wished me to write an elaborate letter for Wenzhi; currently the writing is not yet finished. Instruct him to maintain and protect the three karmas for the present, so as to benefit both himself and others. Someone is leaving, so I have nothing more to say; settling your body for the sake of the Dharma is foremost. Incomplete.
