崇炬闍梨。久不得信，近日如何。風聞已赴本業景德開講，僧俗歸心。須知城隍不比鄉縣，又是受業去處，上下難受化，必須降意接物、軟語談真，使聞者皆忻、見者獲益。汝之智辯足可為眾，但恐寺眾有見汝行止有不廉處，又恐檀信見熟別有誹謗，於教無光。更須護持，則盡善盡美矣。吾為懺期將滿，報願未能，眾障交興，莫我遣却。仍為教藏未圓，恐後來師徒講習艱難，以故忍死力為成之。今遣學者往彼邦緣化印法華經記，切在勸贊門徒多少結緣，令吾心志滿足也。此外宜息身心，莫令生病。是祝是祝。不具。

To Ācārya Chongju: I have not received your letter for a long time; how have you been recently? I heard by rumor that you have already gone to your home temple, Jingde, to open lectures, and monks and laity turn their hearts to you. You must know that a prefectural seat is unlike rural subprefectures, and it is moreover the place where you received your training; those above and below are difficult to transform. You must humble your mind in dealing with others, and discuss the truth with gentle words, so that those who hear will all rejoice and those who see will obtain benefit. Your wisdom and eloquence are sufficient to lead the assembly, but I only fear that the monastery assembly might see some unchaste aspect in your conduct, and also fear that benefactors, seeing you too familiarly, may harbor other slanders, bringing no glory to the teaching. If you guard and preserve it even more, then it will be completely good and beautiful. Because my repentance period is about to end and I have not yet fulfilled my vows, numerous obstacles arise in turn, and I cannot dismiss them. Furthermore, because the treasury of teachings is not yet complete, fearing that later masters and disciples will find study difficult, I have therefore endured death and striven to accomplish it. Now I send a student to your region to solicit funds to print the commentary on the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Sūtra; it crucially lies in encouraging your disciples to form karmic connections, whether much or little, so that my intention may be fulfilled. Apart from this, you should rest body and mind and not let yourself fall ill. This is my wish, this is my wish. Incomplete.
