5.121

（知禮）在懺中，忽承賢力生長老奄歸真寂，驚惻久如不能自已。然則道人去住故是尋常，但以久沐慈憐，難平悲愴。雖夙敦戒定之力，更宜多以誦念資之。智者尚令弟子勤禮懺資吾生處，在菴長洞明豈須更說。鄙僧懺法絕於慶吊，情不可遏，故破制作手簡相問，令人送蠟茶二挺、印香一兩，希為供養為幸。延慶苾芻（知禮）謹白。

While Zhili was in the midst of repentance, I suddenly received word that Elder Xianli Shengguo has abruptly returned to true stillness; my shock and sorrow have lasted long, and I cannot contain myself. However, for a person of the Way, departing and staying are indeed ordinary; yet having long bathed in his compassion, it is difficult to calm my grief. Although he was long solid in the power of precepts and samādhi, it is even more fitting to assist him extensively with recitations. Even Zhizhe bade his disciples diligently perform repentance rituals to assist his place of rebirth; for the Hermitage Head who penetrates clearly, why need I say more? This humble monk's repentance ritual cuts off all congratulations and condolences, but my feelings cannot be suppressed; therefore I broke the regulation to write a personal note to inquire, and sent someone to deliver two cakes of wax tea and one liang of stamped incense, hoping it may serve as an offering. Bhikṣu Zhili of Yanqing respectfully speaks.
