5.53

承師有言：燒身臂指，乃是出家菩薩。捨身命財，方名真法供養。此語出《梵網》、《法華》二經，然並是魔王所說，且非正教。

I have heard the master say: 'Burning the body, arms, or fingers pertains only to renunciant bodhisattvas. Relinquishing the body, life, and wealth is alone called the true Dharma-offering.' These words appear in the two sūtras *Brahmajāla* and *Saddharmapuṇḍarīka*; however, they were both spoken by the Māra king and are not orthodox teachings.
