[Yang] Yi states: Recently I specially sent a messenger, which I reckon has already been conveyed to you. Since I was in the midst of mourning, at first my narration of sentiments was indeed not exhaustive. Because I previously extended my earnest plea, hoping for your permanent stay, this accords with the sincerity of both monastics and laity and secretly tallies with the wish of dragons and devas. Having graciously received your golden promise, it distantly comforts my humble heart; the secret teachings of the Tiantai range are spared the worry of being cut off like a thread, and the wisdom-life of Gṛdhrakūṭa can broadly extend the transmission of the lamp. The companions of the society rejoice together, and the dwelling in the sky repeatedly reports it. Yet I still fear that the Great Master has not forgotten his former thoughts and still clings to his vow, externally yielding to our entreaties while internally still harboring his resolute will. Moreover, the heaven of meaning has newly emerged and the field of transformation gathers around you; praying for the prolongation of your lifespan to guide faculties to gradual ripening, benefiting others will be extensive and repaying the Buddha will be profound. Devoutly disclosing my humble heart, I hope it fulfills the hopes of the multitude. I respectfully prepare this letter to inquire after your health; prostratingly hoping you will look upon it with favor. Respectfully written.
