[Zhi]li prostratingly reflects: Formerly seeking to hide in obscurity, I reflected on my mediocre talent; rinsing my mouth with stones and pillowing on streams, I did not trade for glory or gain; withdrawing vision and turning hearing inward, I only took pleasure in the subtle and imperceptible. Planning to cast away this phantom-like body, I hoped to spur the wisdom of non-arising. How could I have expected that across such distant bounds of refinement, you would distantly convey your graceful words, subtly revealing expressions of exhortation to cause me to withdraw the deadline of my true return? Golden tablets and jade words, as if descending into a cinnabar chamber; gemmed blossoms and jade branches, forever shining within my thatched hut. A thousand jun is not heavy, yet how could the three contemplations tire? Turning my thoughts to my frail insignificance, how could I dare speak of superior achievement? However, you, Imperial Son-in-law and Commandant, are the nation's pillar and the people's hope, with pure spirit and bright discernment, of vastly transcendent character; Du Hao was barely fit to be a secondary minister, while your fame and radiance vigorously shine, so that messengers could hardly keep pace. This is truly because you honor the Dao and esteem others, diffusing humility and exalting deference. Since you have manifested generous persuasion, how could I withhold my promised word? Therefore, I dare to exhaust my decrepit and foolish self, lecturing and explaining for the time being, hoping to rely on vast benefit to look up and thank your immense kindness.
