During the Yuanfeng era [1078–1085], in the upper reaches of Shanxi, there was the lecturer Zitong who, traveling to Sanqu, visited Dharma Master Changshoushui. On the wall he saw several hanging scrolls, all being letters given by the Venerable Siming to his disciple Master Ju. The brushwork and phrasing were plain and unadorned, the moral righteousness relaxed and generous, possessing the awe-inspiring style of the ancients. Zitong immediately copied them to return with, and from this they were circulated. Now, when Siming revived the ancestral Way, the disciples who received his Dharma were beyond count; but Master [Ju] attained the deepest realization, uniquely displaying the beauty of outdoing the master. When he was under his wheel and sat at the head of the assembly, the community requested him to deliver secondary lectures; Siming listened and was astonished, remarking, 'On him my future will rely!' When he first appeared in the world to lead Benye Monastery in Sanqu, Siming bestowed upon him a hand-censer and a ruyi, which sufficiently demonstrated the depth of his seal of approval. Later he went to the capital; Emperor Zhenzong heard of his name and summoned him to lecture on the *Sūtra of Forty-two Chapters*, whereupon he was bestowed a monastic robe. Subsequently he returned to his home district and resided as abbot of Fushi. This mountain had previously been a Chan monastery. The elder Yuanxun, upon hearing the master lecture and chant, thereupon inquired about the meaning of delusion arising from the real. With a single word they harmonized; [Yuanxun] turned to pay homage and become his disciple, and immediately relinquished this cloister to become a permanent school of the doctrinal teachings. Once the master opened the Dharma, students gathered like clouds; he greatly expanded the lecture hall and propagated the sacred transformation. Down to the present day, the practice of the Tiantai Way in Sanqu is due to the master's efforts. Zitong obtained these letters and cherished them greatly, and further added a colophon about what he had obtained at the end. Before long, over the course of years, clerical errors multiplied; I have therefore pruned and adjusted them, placing this preface at the beginning, so that readers may first know the provenance of the texts. Recorded by Zongxiao on the day after the Mid-Autumn Festival in the second year of Jiatai [1202].
