Chongju: Recently during the summer, I received your letters five times, and learned that you accepted the invitation from Dongchan in Huangyan, Taizhou. I hear that monastics and laypeople alike came repeatedly two and three times; since this has stirred the minds of the multitude and brought about the revival of our teaching, how could one not rejoice? Previously, the master of the ocean of teachings brought a letter from Dongshan and also mentioned this matter; I do not know when you will proceed thither to begin your lectures. Since you have accepted their invitation, you should listen to my words. In all matters of establishing oneself and practicing the Way, although Confucianism and Buddhism take different paths in worldly affairs, how could they differ [in principle]? One must first make establishing oneself the primary task, and next plan the practice of the Way. Humility is the handle of virtue; you should firmly hold to it, so that your person is established from this and the Way is practiced from this. I see that among students, those who are eager for fame and profit are all unable to gather disciples and expound the teachings; you should look upon such people as treacherous intimates and fear them like tigers and wolves. This should first be warned against; only thereafter should you advance in vigorous lecturing—how could this await further words? In addition, you should peruse the collected writings of the Confucians and broadly investigate the elegant words of the Five Classics, aiming so that in your writing and editing you do not fall into common and vulgar phrasing. I have always run contrary to this learning, which has often been my regret. Since you are still young, you should not stick to clumsy simplicity; you should emulate the works of Ācārya Yuan. This is my earnest charge. If you see Uncle Yuan, convey my sincere regards for me. Constrained by Buddhist affairs, human sentiments are often neglected. The spring noise grows gradually warmer; it is even more important to reduce sleep and moderate food as the essential practice. There is nothing else to say. Incompletely stated. (Signature) Given to Ācārya Chongju by the Seat Master.
