In the bingshen year [996], in the seventh month of autumn, the cloister succeeded the old [monastery]; over ten years, new undertakings were begun and renovations completed, and in the jiyou year [1009] their completion was announced, which Duke Shi engraved on stone to record. By the renzi year [1012], a total of seventeen years had passed, and incoming students were all settled in peace. The two masters with one mind prayed to the Buddha that their longevity might find repose, making illustrious and glorious the Shan family's doctrinal gate. Having fulfilled what was arranged, and fearing that their life spans would not be long, they entrusted the cloister to future worthy successors, so that only those who excel in continuing [the lineage] might reside here, transmitting it forever and ever, and not bestowing it upon their own disciples as a private inheritance. They thereupon composed an admonition and vow so that there would be no going back on their words of instruction. Turning to their personally ordained disciples (Licheng, Youxuan, Benci, Benchang, Shangxian, Decai, Tanhui, Tanjue, and Banchun), they made this admonition and vow. Thereupon we youngsters all bowed repeatedly and received the instruction, carving it on stone in the second month so that it would endure imperishably. The primary master is named (Zhili); the secondary master is named (Yiwen).
